Wildfire Near Midlothian Snowsports Centre: A Wake-Up Call for Us All
Happy Friday!
On April 1st, a wildfire broke out near the Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend, casting plumes of smoke over the Pentland Hills and forcing the facility to delay opening. What may have once felt like a rare incident is now becoming an alarmingly familiar scene across Scotland.
Fire crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, bringing the gorse fire under control—but not before it served as the fourth significant wildfire in Scotland in just two weeks.
These aren't just isolated events. Scotland is currently under an "extreme wildfire risk" warning due to unusually dry weather, high winds, and sunny conditions. The changing climate is transforming our natural beauty spots into tinderboxes.
As Scotland enjoys a spell of warm and dry weather, the Met Office has issued an amber wildfire warning for southern regions, including areas around Edinburgh. With temperatures expected to reach up to 21°C (70°F) and breezy conditions persisting, the risk of wildfires has significantly increased.
This fire, and others like it, don’t just affect hillsides—they threaten wildlife, homes, local businesses, and the people who live and work in these communities.
Why This Matters to Communities:
• Hillend isn’t just a sports centre—it’s a hub for outdoor adventure, family outings, and education.
• Fires like this can damage ecosystems and force long-term closures.
• Emergency services are stretched thin, often putting themselves at risk to protect us.
What You Can Do:
We all have a part to play in prevention. Here’s how you can help:
• Never leave BBQs or campfires unattended—and don’t use them in dry grassy areas.
• Dispose of cigarettes properly, even in what seems like a safe place.
• Leave no glass behind—even a bottle or jar can concentrate sunlight and start a blaze.
• Report smoke or suspicious activity immediately by calling 999.
As the weather gets warmer and more people head to the hills and parks, let this be a reminder to enjoy responsibly. Fire may seem like a distant danger—until smoke’s rising outside your window.
