Treasures of the National Library of Scotland: A Hidden Gem
Happy Thursday
Imagine stepping into a space where Scotland’s past whispers its stories, where every corner holds a piece of history waiting to be uncovered. That’s exactly what you’ll find at the National Library of Scotland’s Treasures exhibition! Whether you're a history buff, a literature lover, or just someone who enjoys discovering something new, this is a must-visit.
📍 Where? National Library of Scotland, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh Old Town, EH1 1EW
🕰 When? Monday-Thursday: 10am - 7pm | Friday-Saturday: 10am - 5pm
🎟 Entry: Free (Yes, you read that right!)
A Journey Through Time
This exhibition is a true time capsule, offering a glimpse into Scotland’s rich history and culture. You’ll find:
📜 Ancient manuscripts that have survived centuries
📍 Detailed maps showcasing Scotland’s evolution
📖 Rare books revealing the country’s literary legacy
🎥 Interactive displays & videos bringing history to life
With texts in English, Gaelic, and Scots, this is a space for everyone to connect with Scotland’s past in their own way. Plus, because of the delicate nature of some artefacts, the displays change throughout the year—meaning there’s always something new to discover!

Stories That Inspire
One of the highlights? The exhibition shines a light on Isobel Wylie Hutchinson, a Scottish explorer who braved the Arctic in the early 20th century. Imagine the courage it took for a woman to travel solo in those times! You’ll also see a 15th-century Gaelic medical manuscript once owned by physician James Beaton—an incredible link to Scotland’s medical past.
The Library doesn’t just preserve history—it celebrates it! Scotland’s impact on the literary world is also a key theme. Did you know Edinburgh was named the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature in 2004? The exhibition pays tribute to the nation’s authors, bookbinding traditions, and the early days of printing in Scotland.

A Library for the Future
Not only does the National Library of Scotland preserve physical artefacts, but they’re also working hard to digitize their collections—making Scotland’s history accessible to everyone, everywhere. If you’d like to support this mission, donations to the Library are always welcome.
