Granton’s Gasholder Reopens as Edinburgh’s Most Unique Park
Good morning,
Something exciting just opened in Edinburgh — and it’s unlike anything else in the city.
The historic Granton Gasholder, one of the most recognisable structures along the waterfront, has been transformed into a stunning public park. Officially opened on April 4, the park now welcomes visitors to walk, relax, and reconnect with the area’s industrial past in a whole new way.
🛠️ The Project:
Originally built in 1903, the gasholder once stored gas for Edinburgh’s growing population.
The steel frame was preserved and repurposed, now surrounding a beautifully landscaped park with open green space, circular walkways, seating, and play zones.
This is part of the £1.3 billion Granton Waterfront Regeneration project, one of the biggest development efforts in the UK, aiming to deliver over 3,500 homes, cultural venues, public spaces, and sustainable infrastructure.
🌊 Why It Matters:
The project reconnects the local community with its coastline.
It turns a relic of the industrial age into a vibrant, accessible civic space.
It’s a symbol of how Edinburgh is combining heritage preservation with modern urban design.
🎉 Next Up:
A community fun day will be held soon to celebrate the park’s opening — expect activities for all ages, local food vendors, and family-friendly fun under the steel skeleton of history.
📍 You can find the new park just off West Shore Road, Granton — open daily, free to enjoy.
